Unlike traditional porcelain veneers which were originally invented in the 1930s, state-of-the-art LUMINEERS require NO REMOVAL OF SENSITIVE TOOTH STRUCTURE, although in some cases, slight “softening” or contouring of the tooth may be necessary to properly prepare the tooth for successful bonding. One of the best attributes of LUMINEERS is their non-invasive nature, and the fact that Dr. Goldsmith NEVER has needed to use heavy drilling, numbing shots, or local anesthetic to successfully complete a case.

In order to prepare a tooth for traditional porcelain veneers (as opposed to LUMINEERS), permanent removal and heavy drilling of potentially sensitive enamel is required, as well as the use of shots to numb the site being prepared. Obviously, your enamel will never grow back, and there is a small chance of nerve exposure which can result in slight to severe pain and discomfort. These types of procedures are commonly referred to as “non-reversible”, which means once that enamel is permanently removed, there is no way to reverse the tooth to its original form and function, unlike LUMINEERS which are reversible.

The entire process to complete a LUMINEERS case is really quick and easy. During your first visit, Dr. Goldsmith will perform all of the necessary preparatory procedures, which may include gum contouring, enalmelplasty, etc., all of which are completely painless and require no shots. At that time we will also take impressions, choose your tooth shade, and take photos to send to the Denmat laboratory so that they can fabricate your custom LUMINEERS.

Once we receive your LUMINEERS case from the laboratory (about 3-4 weeks later), we will schedule your second visit. This appointment will consist of trying in the LUMINEERS to make sure that you approve of the fit, shape, shade, and look great! We use a temporary bonding agent, so that you can see them in before we permanently bond them. If you like how they look and are happy with the shade, we will then bond them in permanently at that time..and voila – you have an attractive, permanently bright white smile! Since the bonding agent takes a few days to completely cure, we like to bring you back just once more for a quick visit to remove any excess cement between the teeth, and that’s it!
